Hilton House in Paradise by the Sea Designed by Renowned Architect Arthur Dyson
The Hilton house is the most iconic exclusive private residence on the Emerald Coast. Little details are known about the home, however, anyone that has visited Scenic 30A knows about this architectural masterpiece. The Hilton Estate sits on 4 gulf front lots in Paradise by the Sea with approximate 260 feet of Gulf Frontage and 2.522 acres. Under construction for over 10 years, this magnificent estate was designed by Renowned Architect, Arthur Dyson.
Dyson, who studied under famed designer Frank Lloyd Wright, was picked in a worldwide search by Panama City businessman Charles Hilton and his wife, Lela, to design their seaside home, Dyson said. The 9,500-square-foot house captures the fluidity of the surrounding ocean waves using Dyson’s trademark designs of sweeping lines and curves with a focus on scale, texture and color.
The open floor plan has few walls creating a seamless transition throughout the five-bedroom, six bathroom home. The primary rooms are suspended on concrete pods at various levels inside the house. A staircase winds around a glass-enclosed elevator while a second stairway curves around native palm plants.
A blue-green tinted glass provides the homeowners with unobstructed views of the ocean while a large wing-like white roof shields the home from the sun.
The top lacuna of an exterior two-level saltwater swimming pool fountains into the lower basin, then enters the interior by flowing beneath the edge of a glazed wall. Tiered roof wings sweep upward, forming a series of clerestories that shield the open floor plan from excessive sun exposure while presenting unobstructed views of the oceanfront during daytime and allowing stargazing at night. Remote-controlled fabric panels placed strategically over the glazing provide additional solar protection.
Interior spaces flow freely without walls or partitions, while scale and volume are tempered through the placement of palms and other tropical flora. Level changes rhythmically establish area separations and maximize direct ocean views. The varying colors and textures of terraces, walls, planters, and pools avoid sharp definitions of boundary, integrating the the interior and exterior of the home into a sense of contained movement. The gestures of the form join harmoniously with the surrounding swell of seabird, ocean waves, and sand dunes that embrace an exceptional building site. Everything set forward for the program by the clients indicated a desire for fluidity. All the exterior benefits of the site, such as sea breezes and ocean sunsets, are integrated into the residence to establish a refuge from the hectic pace of a busy business life and create a soothing place to relax, read, and write.289 Paradise by the Sea – Main House Located on Lots 1, 2, and 3 encompassing 1.972 acres Estimated main house square feet is 9,500sf 287 Paradise by the Sea – Guest House Located on Lot 4 – 0.55 acres Estimate guest house square feet is 2,458sf
