302 ruskin Place in Seaside is famous for its stunning architecture and rich history. The quintessential mid-century modern townhouse ideally located on the corner site overlooking Ruskin Place was designed by internationally recognized New York architect, Alexander Gorlin as his own personal residence. This house was conceived both as a critique of the architectural style that developed at Seaside as well as an affirmation of its urban plan. The public gesture of an open stair leading to the living area above the shop recalls the open loggias of Italian houses on piazzas or a traditional brownstone stoop, encouraging public interaction. Double-height glass windows in the living area frame the view of Ruskin Place, and creates an intermediary zone between the public space and the internal private retreat.
The “Rubeo Architects” sign, a remnant of the home’s feature in the 1996 movie, ‘The Truman Show’, still hangs out front.
The kitchen has recently undergone upgrades including marble countertops and new stainless appliances. Red oak floors throughout the main living areas, ceramic tile in the powder bath with a Sappho pedestal sink, and curved wall breakfast area comprise the second floor. The oak and plaster spiral stair lead to the third level master suite with French doors opening to a private balcony over looking the town of Seaside. Master ensuite has marble countertops, a spacious shower filled with natural light provided by the overhead skylight, and tiled walls. The roof top terrace is accessed by the master suite. Once on the rooftop, the views of Seaside and the Gulf of Mexico are simply amazing in all directions. The first floor is comprised of two additional bedrooms that share a bath. One of these bedrooms can easily be converted into a flex space that can either be an art studio or shop.
This home has been constructed with the finest architectural grade elements including block construction, steel doors and windows, red oak flooring, and carerra marble countertops. The property is being sold fully furnished with designer pieces from Aida, Eames, Foscarini, Sakura, Alivar, and original artwork on the ground floor from Justin Lyons.
